Out and about

Mostly in pursuit of food.

Beautiful t-shirt weather in July on the first Monday of break, when I went for some shopping on Pitt St. I've been back about four times and out of all those shopping trips I have only bought one thing! Sales, you let me down every year.

The Soda Factory, a bar in Surry Hills (close to Hyde Park) which is sort of hidden behind a coke machine door and a sign with a different name. We went for the $1 hotdogs (every Tuesday) but I'm going back for the macaroni and cheese and the chilli fries.

I've started running again!. Gotta burn those calories somehow. Or, more importantly, to keep fit so that we can hop from restaurant/bar to chocolate cafe with maximum efficiency (this seems to be routine these days - we have dinner, and then go to a chocolate bar to for a lengthy discussion about our lack of love life/feminism/politics).

Passing through Angel Place on our way to Jamie's Italian (which we didn't end up eating cause the wait was too long and we were too hungry), which has this installation. There were bird chirping noises accompanying the installation and for one moment of horror I thought they were actually keeping birds in those cages. It's called Forgotten Songs, and the birdsong is that of birds which were forced out of central Sydney by European settlement.

"Do you want to add ice cream?" "No th- oh go on, then." I tried the Max Brenner chocolate souffle for the first time the other day. And then went back a couple of days later to have it again. SO GOOD, the ice cream is a must to cut through all that chocolate goodness, and besides what sane person can say no to ice cream anyway?

El Loco at Slip Inn, a couple minutes past the Apple store. I've been to the Surry Hills one before but I'm glad this newer one opened, because I'm more often in this part of the city. The pork taco was good but man, I'm still thinking about that chorizo quesadilla with the chipotle sauce. They do nice (but expensive) margarita slushies too.

Dessert run to Brighton-le-Sands on a chilly night, which culminated in fries at McDonalds.

One more week of break left, I'm wavering between feeling slightly panicky about how little I've used the time off to revise and feeling slightly panicky about how little I've used the time to have fun, which begs the question... what exactly have I been doing? Maybe this is just the feeling of balance (or the guilt from 2-hour online shopping sessions).

  3. "Deluminators: personal blog and home of foodporn." Seriously Jane, this is too good to be true. It's 11.30 pm here and I am finally sitting down behind my computer after a long day of work, fully satisfied, and oh goodness, that chocolate soufflé just looks like it got straight out of food-heaven... if you know... such place existed (pssht, I think the place is called Sydney but, hey, I can be wrong)

  8. I don't know what a chocolate cafe is but it sounds like my kind of place! The chocolate souffle looks so good, I'm hungry now just thinking about it. The birdcage installation in Angel Place is so beautiful, what a wonderful reason for it too xx

    1. A chocolate cafe is pretty much what it sounds like - a cafe, but with lots of chocolate based things!

  9. Oh wow, I don't even know what that last dessert is but it looks incredible! I hardly even eat Mexican food either, but just the sight of it's making me hungry. I really need to expand my horizons food-wise, don't I...

  10. it really is all about the food with you guys, no skimping at all. El Loco's sounds like my kinda thing. Me too, I have to gym it twice I week or I'd have a massive belly problem.

  11. haha we go to so many of the same places! the max brenner souffle has always been a favourite of mine, if i'm getting food it's usually always that or waffles. my best friend's brother used to work at a max brenner a suburb away from us (when she was living at home) and he'd give us free souffles, it was THE BEST! love the soda factory too, i've been there a few times in the last couple of weeks after gigs, it's a great place!

  12. Okay, no lie, I'm on a juice cleanse right now and you're making me go freakin' crazy over here, haha. Max Brenner's is like the end of me, haha. It's impossible to just order one thing! Have you tried their s'mores before? And hey, balance is overrated. As long as you feel satisfied and happy, things will work themselves out :)

  17. i LOVE jamie's italian, even if it is quite expensive for the portion size - i like HEARTY portions thank you very much!!

that installation looks SO cool, but probably a little bit freaky in real life, not surprised you thought they had real birds in!

lovely blog btw, glad to have stumbled across it!

  19. I think when I go out to places, I subconsciously just have one agenda: food.
I am surprised I haven't heard of half the places you have mentioned here. Except for the popular joints, I think I should have a look out for the $1 hotdogs, if I'm ever around Hyde Park again. (Which is often, because what type of Sydney'r would you be if you don't frequent that park)

And what camera(s) did you use to take photos. The heavy grain on Bobby Boss Burger looks like film?

    1. Haha you give me too much credit! I used my iphone for all these photos, the heavy grain is just bad quality :)
