Stoker (2013)

Still in a blogging rut, so I'm branching out and giving my poor neglected tv/film tag a bit of a boost. Stoker was one of my favourite movies from last year. It's about an 18 year old girl whose father dies and charming/creepy uncle comes to stay, a sort of twisted coming of age film I suppose. There is so much attention paid to the visuals and atmosphere, but not at the expense of the plot, which was satisfyingly creepy and intriguing. I'd spoiled the twist for myself in advance though, it probably would have been more enjoyable if I hadn't.

Screencaps from here. Not going to lie, one of the main reasons I liked the movie was cause of the main character's outfits. I've been considering getting saddle shoes ever since I watched it.

  1. I've never heard of this film (but I was out of the country for the entirety of 2013) but the screen caps definitely give it that eerie feeling. I'll have to watch it sometime.

  2. It IS eerie and I just read the synopsis--I couldn't watch; I'd be too creeped out! I really like the harmony between the costume color palette and the production/staging of the set.

  7. This was, by far, my favourite film of 2013! Mia Wasikowska's most mesmerising role. And I've got the hots for Uncle Charlie, obviously, with his charming presence and psycho smirk. The soundtrack is perfect and the wardrobe, well... I had to pause it several times so I could appreciate all the outfits. India Stoker's sense of style was really something. Saddle shoes, pleated skirts, vintage cardigans, retro collars... It's like a fashionable version of a Wes Anderson-created Wednesday Addams! The atmosphere and the cinematography are also beautiful... Also, I will never forget about that scene in the shower and the one in the piano duet... Still stuck in my memory.

  12. Those saddle shoes though! Amazing. This movie completely passed me by last year, I'd seen some bloggers raving on about it but I never got onto actually checking it out. I might now, though.
