Picnicking under attack

Yesterday Carrie held a picnic for her birthday so we made our way to the Botanical Gardens. It had been raining in the morning, but we were lucky that it held off for the rest of the day.

The birthday girl and an entire mini-esky of alcohol. Don't know how that happened...

YY and her only friend.

It was a nice day, but I didn't take many pictures. Might have had something to do with the fact that I had to be on guard because this INSANE BIRD kept on swooping at us. Like, every five minutes! It touched me and I don't think I'll be able to hear the flapping of wings without twitching for a while now. I guess it's nesting season and we were in its territory... and too lazy to move all our blankets and food. But seriously you don't have to worry about the sharks and crocodiles and poisonous snakes in Australia, you worry about terrifying aggressive birds. At least it wasn't a magpie, those things don't mess around, I'm convinced they could kill a man (actually according to Wikipedia they have caused deaths).

ETA: I totally forgot about the giveaway! The winner is Philippa, I will be emailing you right now.

  6. I am sort of terrified of birds. Once when I was just about to start eating a cheeseburger outside Maccas in Circular Quay, 3 seagulls swarmed to my burger and stole it (because I dropped it.. Not worth having birds peck at you for your burger). Another time, I stupidly threw a piece of chip to a pigeon at Wynyard Park and - I swear - 60 pigeons flew from the trees to the lone chip.

  7. Last time I was at a picnic in the Botannical Gardens, an ibis came from behind me and snatched my sandwich away. They're so aggressive.

  8. haha, thats the worst thing. We finally get some sunshine but are too scared to go outside incase we get swooped by a magpie! Gah! They havn't started swooping where I live yet thankfully! I really want to have a picnic now!

  9. Those are some bold birds. At my work there are two trees in front of our entrance that is the hangout for a posse of crows. They're a bit scary to walk under--there is a ring leader with a group of four or five, and they chase out non-crow birds and other crows as well. They get loud, and like you said they're fearless and they swoop!

Don't birds have dinosaur leanings? Eek. Thank goodness we don't have birds with car-length wingspans anymore (oh god please don't prove me wrong Wiki.)

    1. The fact that a group of crows is called a "murder" says everything you need to know about crows...

LOL they don't even need car-length wingspans to be terrifying!

  10. Haha so funny to hear about your stories about the birds. You guys do have aggressive ones here in Australia. Pretty much anything that moves over on this side of the planet seems to be more dangerous here. What gives?

It's been a while, hope you've been ok!

  11. Birds are a bit weird, they are my least favourite kind of animal. I haven't been for a picnic in so long, but I do like cheese.

What a redundant comment that was...

    1. I guess I can name worse animals than birds... but there's a reason there's a horror movie featuring them.

  17. Hello Jane,

We have been led to you via another Jane and, upon arrival, see that we are kindred spirits. Picnics and alcohol a marriage made in heaven and, with a delicious French cheese, what more could one ask for? Well, yes, one could have asked for a bird free day.......but then when outdoors.....

We have signed up as followers and look forward to some happy returns!

  21. Ahh I hate when the birds dive at you. I had a pigeon (yes a gross pigeon) do that to me at a cafe once and I lost it! It touched my hair and scrapped my head and I wanted to scream :) Other than bird encounters, picnics in the park at the best
